This Shoe Trend Solves Early Fall Dressing Dilemmas

It’s all about the sleek wedge right now

By Morgan Hills

The return of the wedge has been building for several seasons. This summer was all about peep-toe styles, and for fall, things are looking decidedly sleeker. The latest wedge pumps have all the polish and coverage of a classic pump, but the wedge gives them a less expected look.

That’s also why they’re so easy to work into a fall wardrobe. They look just as great with sharp tailoring for the office as they do with a long skirt or dress for dinner, and once tights come into play, the extra coverage is a major plus. You also get a little more stability than you would with a stiletto, without sacrificing the height. Designers from the Row to Tory Burch and Jil Sander offer their own modern take on the wedge, offering plenty of variety within the trend, from barely-there mini wedges to higher, more sculpted heels.

Toes range from ultra-sharp points to softer almond shapes, with slingbacks joining more traditional pumps and mules. Suede and leather lend themselves to everyday wear, while satin, metallics, and croc-effect textures skew dressier. So whether you want something subtle or a pair with a little more personality, there’s plenty to choose from.

Ahead, shop the wedge pumps we’re loving for fall.
