David Beckham Says ‘It Wasn’t Easy’ to Convince Victoria Beckham to Do Her Own Netflix Docuseries, but It’s ‘Really Special’: ‘It’s So Emotional and the Drama’s Real’

David Beckham teased his wife Victoria Beckham’s upcoming Netflix docuseries at MIP Lonodn on Tuesday, telling Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria that “it’s really special.”

However, the former soccer star turned Inter Miami FC co-owner and — most recently — Emmy-winning producer confessed that it took a while to convince Victoria to get on board.

“It took a minute to try and get her to agree with it,” he said. “It wasn’t something that was easy. I think I’m then only who could convince her and I did, eventually.”

Beckham continued that viewers will see Victoria “in a different light.”

My wife is one of the hardest working women that I know, and she’s been building her business for the last 20 years ,” he said. “There’s so many different elements of this documentary that people are going to be surprised with … I suppose some people probably think she started this brand, it came very easy, but she’s been working for along time.”

He added, “I think it’s going to be really special. It’s so emotional, there’s drama — and the drama’s real.”

Beckham then described a dramatic scene that took place at last year’s Paris Fashion Week, saying: “I turned up, like I always do, the night before to see the venue and do the walk through with her,” he said. “I’m never worried about one of her shows, but I was worried. It was scheduled for rain. The rain was horrendous. Girls were cold. Every everything about it had the potential to go wrong.”

Despite moving into production later than many sports stars with such a global profile, Beckham made a huge splash in 2023 with “Beckham,” the four-part docuseries chronicling his life, career and marriage to Victoria Beckham that was made through his own Studio 99 production company. Directed by Fisher Stevens, the series was met with critical acclaim and wound up winning the Emmy for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series last year.

In a cover story with Variety last year, Beckham discussed his fears over his children watching “Beckham.”

“I was a little bit worried about my daughter seeing some of the things that were being said about me over the years and how she would react,” he said, adding that nothing surprised her. “I’ve been telling my daughter for a long time that Mommy used to wear very, very short skirts. And then she was like, ‘Daddy, Mommy did really wear really, really short skirts!’ But she loved it.”

Victoria Beckham will be next to get the Netflix docuseries treatment, also from Studio 99. Directed by “Becoming” helmer Nadia Hallgren, the as-yet-untitled series started production in August and will follow Beckham’s journey from Spice Girls superstardom in the ‘90s to modern fashion maven. As per the logline, “Her Posh Spice days may be behind her, but today Beckham is on a journey to build a fashion empire — and now, fans will be able to see the story behind it all.”

Other productions from Studio 99 include the Disney+ series “Save Our Squad,” plus “Edge of Everything” about snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and an upcoming documentary about the history and rivalry between sports brands Adidas and Puma.
