Netflix releases first scene from 'Zero Day' starring Robert De Niro

By ben Margen

Robert De Niro plays two roles in a new film from Goodfellas screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, which hits theaters in March, but first, you can see him in the upcoming Netflix series Zero Day from Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim.

Netflix has released the opening scene for the series, which follows De Niro as former president George Mullen.

The quick minute-and-a-half clip introduces us to a frantic Mullen, who's testing different codes on a safe to try and break into it.

More atmospheric than action based, Zero Day's preview sets the tone for the series that Netflix says "asks the question on everyone's mind."

What are those questions? Well, the official synopsis for Zero Day asks: "how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?"

De Niro's joined by a great ensemble cast, made up of Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Angela Bassett, Matthew Modine, Joan Allen, Mozhan Navabi, McKinley Belcher III, Michael Bonini, Cuyle Carvin, Dan Stevens, Bill Camp, TJ Lee, Gaby Hoffmann, Clark Gregg, Mark Ivanir, and Jay Klaitz.

Zero Day is set to hit Netflix on February 20 and "looks at the cost of power for those who are asked to take on these enormous challenges — what it means for them personally, and what it means for their families," Oppenheim told Netflix.

De Niro also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside series director Lesli Linka Glatter. Also executive producing are Jonathan Glickman, Eric Newman, Peter Oberth, Noah Oppenheim, and Michael Schmidt.

Eli Attie, Amy Herman, and Roberto Patino serve as co-exec producers, with Tim King as a producer and Jon Otazua and Austin Titley as co-producers.
