Joe Biden’s Supreme Court reform explained
President Joe Biden has outlined his vision for reforming the U.S. Supreme Court in an opinion piece for the Washington Post.
Biden’s “three bold reforms” include ensuring former presidents have no immunity for crimes committed while in office, term limits for Supreme Court justices, and a binding code of conduct for the court.
The president said that the proposed changes aim to restore public trust in the court and ensure accountability.
Biden cited the Supreme Court’s recent 6-3 decision to grant presidents broad immunity from prosecution for crimes they commit in office. He said this means that “there are virtually no limits on what a president can do.”
He also pointed to the court’s controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which Biden described as “dangerous and extreme decisions that overturn settled legal precedents.”
He further noted that the court has been “mired in a crisis of ethics,” following several scandals which have called the court’s fairness and independence into question.
“What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms,” Biden wrote.
